ปฐมกาลของขบวนการวิปัสสนาในพม่า: เลดีซะยาดอว์และลัทธิคำสอน

Abstract

This thesis illustrates a development of the Burmese Buddhist literature since the 13th century. In its early period, the Burmese Buddhist literature was mainly influenced by the Theravada Buddhist tradition in Sri Lanka. During the 17th-18th centuries, Burmese Buddhist literature had some prosodic changes and few Burmese literati had appeared to compose texts related with the corporeal and material world. However, in the 19th century when the Konbaung dynasty was defeated in the Anglo-Burmese Wars, there came in this period the important determinant factor such as the printing technology which had immensely influenced the knowledge transformation and the worldview adjustment of the Burmese elites, especially those elites of the Chindwin basin who had close connection with influential monks during the Konbuang dynasty. At this particular period, Ledy Sayadaw who was the influential Buddhist monk had established his vihara in this area. He did not only sermonize his Dhamma teachings to the Burmese Buddhist monks but also the Burmese laities. Furthermore, he summarized some parts of the Abhidhamma Canon and published in a manual book form. As a result, the Buddha’s teaching became widespread than ever before among the Burmese Buddhist laities. However, some of Ledy Sayadaw’s manual books had infuriated some Burmese elites and monks because some of his interpretations were rather different from the old tradition. At the middle of the 20th century, some Western scholars became interested in Ledy Sayadaw’s teachings and applied his doctrines for the psycho-therapeutic technique, especially in the chronic case and the mental disorder.

ในช่วงราวคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 13 เป็นต้นมา วรรณกรรมบาลีพม่ายังคงรับอิทธิพลจากลังกาเป็นหลัก กระทั่งราวคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 17-18 วรรณกรรมบาลีพม่าจึงเริ่มมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งในด้านขนบฉันทลักษณ์และ ปรากฏงานเขียนในเชิงโลกียะมากขึ้นว่าในระยะแรก ต่อมาในราวช่วงคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 ได้เกิดสงครามระหว่างราชสำนักคองบองของพม่ากับอาณานิคมบริติชราช โดยราชสำนักพม่าเป็นฝ่ายปราชัยในที่สุด ในช่วงเวลานี้ เทคโนโลยีการพิมพ์จากตะวันตกที่เข้ามาในพม่าได้เป็นปัจจัยสำคัญในการทำให้ศาสตร์ความรู้ต่าง ๆ แพร่หลายสู่สาธารณชนอย่างกว้างขวางจากเดิมที่ถูกจำกัดอยู่แต่เพียงในราชสำนักและกลุ่มปัญญาชนบางส่วน ทั้งนี้ กลุ่มปัญญาชนสำคัญที่ได้เข้ามามีบทบาทในราชสำนักคองบองได้แก่ กลุ่มปัญญาชนแห่งลุ่มแม่น้ำชิดวินตอนล่าง ซึ่งมีเครือข่ายความสัมพันธ์จากการเป็นศิษย์ร่วมสำนักพระเถระผู้ที่มีถิ่นพำนักเดิมบริเวณลุ่มน้ำดังกล่าว อีกทั้งยังมีอิทธิพลต่อราชสำนักในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าว

นอกจากนี้ ในห้วงเวลาเดียวกันนั้นปรากฏว่าได้มีพระเถระรูปสำคัญนามว่า เลดีซะยาดอว์ ได้ก่อตั้งสำนักสอนพระธรรมและวัตรวิปัสสนาขึ้นในบริเวณลุ่มน้ำแห่งนี้ อีกทั้งยังเป็นผู้นำเนื้อความจากพระอภิธรรมอันซับซ้อนมาสังเขปแต่งเป็นคู่มือหรือทีปนีจำนวนหนึ่ง โดยมีจุดประสงค์ให้ชาวพม่าสามารถเข้าถึงพระธรรมได้ง่ายขึ้น ทว่างานเขียนบางชิ้นของเลดีซะยาดอว์ก็ได้สร้างข้อถกเถียงในกลุ่มพระคันถรจนาจารย์พม่าเนื่องจากการตีความและข้อวินิจฉัยที่ต่างกัน อย่างไรก็ตาม งานเขียนของเลดีซะยาดอว์นั้นก็ได้ทำให้พระธรรมและวัตรวิปัสสนาถูกเผยแพร่อย่างกว้างขวาง

กระทั่งในราวกลางคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 20 ได้มีกลุ่มชาวตะวันตกที่ศึกษาแนวคิดและวัตรวิปัสสนานี้ไปเผยแพร่และประยุกต์ใช้ในทางวิทยาศาสตร์การแพทย์เพื่อบำบัดรักษาอาการเจ็บป่วยเรื้อรังทางกายและสุขภาพทางจิต
