Abstract: | Teak (Tectona grandis Linn.) leaves contain several color substances that could be used as dyes in hair dye products. In this research, both the young and mature teak leaves were extracted with various solvents using decoction methods. The effect of maturity stage of teak leaves and extraction solvents on the color properties were studied. The color values of the extracts were measured by CIELAB system. The color substances of the extracts were quantified the total phenolic (TPC), flavonoid (TFC) and anthraquinone (TAC) contents and identified by LC-MS analysis. The solubility, stability, hair dyeing ability and color fastness property of the hair dyed were also studied. Fifty percent ethanol was the best solvent for extracting the extracts for both young and mature leaves. The young leaf extracts are redder with higher antioxidant activity, TPC and TFC than the mature leaf extracts. Polysorbate 20 increased water solubility of the extracts to 80.0 g/l for young leaf extract and 76.9 g/l for mature leaf extract. Both photostability and accelerated stability testing found some flavonoid degradation, but slightly change in color of both the young and mature leaf extracts, which promoted their dyeing usage. Hair dyed with young leaf extract was reddish brown, while was brown with mature leaf extract. Moreover, mordants can both change the color shade and increased the color intensity of the dyed hair. FeSO4 gave the dark brown hair, KAl(SO4)2 gave the reddish-brown hair. Meanwhile, CuSO4 gave the various shades of greenish brown hair depended on their concentrations. Mordanting methods effect on the color intensity but not effect on the color shade of the dyed hair. Post-mordanting was the best method for all mordants by providing the highest color intensity of the dyed hair. Additionally, FeSO4 and KAl(SO4)2 were greater than CuSO4 for increasing the color durability of the dyed hairs. Finally, LC-MS profiles presented the color substances in teak leaves are mostly flavonoids that could be done concurrently with TFC and color values to control the color quality of extracts. These results suggest that the EW extracts from both the young and mature teak leaves could be used as natural hair dyes with mordants and developed for hair dye products. - |
