การอธิษฐาน ในบริบทสังคมและวัฒนธรรมไทย

Abstract

This dissertation is a study in the field of folklore. It aims to 1) study and analyze the concept of "Adhitthana" in Buddhism, which is one of the primary ideas and beliefs in Thai society, 2) study and analyze the concept of "Adhitthana" in Thai literature, which is a body of work with a continuing influence on Thai society, 3) study and analyze the meaning, role, and value of "Adhitthana" within Thai socio-cultural context. The analysis of documents involved the selection of data from Buddhist scriptures, specifically the Tripitaka, to represent the predominant belief system in Thai society. Additionally, it encompassed the analysis of 240 Thai literary works as case studies of Thai society and culture, which have been preserved and transmitted from generation to generation.

The study found that the concept of "Adhitthana" in Buddhism is primarily evident in the Vinaya Pitaka, serving as the foundation that governs the practices of Buddhist monks. The concept of "Adhitthana" is found in the Suttanta Pitaka, specifically in the section on "Adhitthana-Parami", as seen in the Jataka stories and Biography of Buddha. These perspectives represent the foundational principles for achieving the elimination of negative influences and serve as a basis and the starting point for various ethical practices that lead to the desired goals within the ultimate religious goal.

According to "Adhitthana" in Thai literature, this concept is a significant “motif” aimed at achieving results on both the secular and transcendent levels. It can be categorized into 6 features based on its intended purpose, including seeking blessings, performing cleromancy, making vows or making sacrifices, taking an oath or cursing, demonstrating supernatural power, and expressing determination to achieve goals. The concept of "Adhitthana" in literary works often refers to the power of divine beings and deities in the Brahmanism or the power of merit in accordance with Buddhist principles.

When combining the meanings, roles, and values of "Adhitthana" from the Buddhist perspective and the way of life as depicted in Thai literature as case studies, it is found that "Adhitthana" reflects a fusion of beliefs and the determination to achieve both secular and transcendent goals that coexist within Thai society. It plays a role in reflecting the issues of "Adhitthana" individuals in relation to their social status and circle of life. As for the value of "Adhitthana", it can be divided into three dimensions. (1) The individual dimension is a life philosophy that instils hope, boosts morale, and sustains determination in achieving goals. It serves as a tool to dispel the fear of "insecurity" in life and the mind. (2) The social and cultural dimension is a significant practice rooted in religious beliefs, contributing to cultural products and social practices, such as, supporting the political system and ensuring state security through curses. It is seen as a form of hidden cultural influence that is sustained and passed down from the past. (3) The transcendental dimension holds that “Adhitthana” holds spiritual value as a pathway for communication with the deities or the divine powers that lead to achieving higher spiritual goals. The successful practice of "Adhitthana" requires a combination of committed "actions" and unwavering "mind", along with the determination, especially for the ultimate goal in Buddhist practice, which is "Nirvana."

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์การวิจัย คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์วิธีคิดเกี่ยวกับ “การอธิษฐาน” ในแนวคิดทางพระพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งเป็นความคิดความเชื่อกระแสหลักประการหนึ่งในสังคมไทย, 2) เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์วิธีคิดเกี่ยวกับ “การอธิษฐาน” ที่ปรากฏในวรรณคดีไทย ซึ่งเป็น ตัวบทที่มีอิทธิพลสืบต่อกันมาในสังคมไทย, 3) เพื่อศึกษาวิเคราะห์ความหมาย บทบาท และคุณค่าของ “การอธิษฐาน” ในบริบทสังคมและวัฒนธรรมไทย การศึกษาใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงวิเคราะห์เอกสาร โดยเลือกศึกษาข้อมูลจากคัมภีร์ทางพระพุทธศาสนา คือ พระไตรปิฎก เป็นตัวแทนความเชื่อกระแสหลักในสังคมไทย และเลือกศึกษาตัวบทวรรณคดีไทยจำนวน 240 เรื่อง เป็นกรณีศึกษาสังคมวัฒนธรรมไทยที่ถูกบันทึกไว้และถ่ายทอดจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นสืบต่อกันมา

ผลการศึกษาพบว่า “การอธิษฐาน” ในพระพุทธศาสนา ปรากฏอยู่ในพระวินัยปิฎก ในฐานะหลักที่กำหนดวัตรปฏิบัติของพระภิกษุสงฆ์ แนวคิดเรื่องการอธิษฐานที่มีอิทธิพลในสังคมไทยพบในพระสุตตันตปิฎกในส่วน “อธิษฐานบารมี” คือที่ปรากฏในชาดกและพุทธประวัติ แสดงถึงหลักธรรมเพื่อบรรลุถึงการกำจัดอำนาจอกุศล นับเป็นพื้นฐานของการปฏิบัติหลักธรรมอื่น เป็นจุดเริ่มต้น และให้กรอบอันนำไปสู่เป้าหมายที่มุ่งหวังได้ในระดับโลกุตระ

“การอธิษฐาน” ที่ปรากฏในวรรณคดีไทย เป็น “อนุภาค” สำคัญที่มุ่งไปสู่ผลทั้งระดับ โลกียะและระดับโลกุตระ จำแนกตามความมุ่งหมายได้ 6 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ การขอพร การเสี่ยงทาย การบนบาน-บวงสรวง การสาปแช่ง-สาบาน การแสดงอิทธิฤทธิ์ และการตั้งมั่นเพื่อบรรลุเป้าหมาย พฤติกรรม “การอธิษฐาน” ในตัวบท มักอ้างถึงอำนาจสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์และเทพเจ้าในศาสนาพราหมณ์หรืออ้างถึงอำนาจบุญบันดาลตามหลักพระพุทธศาสนา

เมื่อเชื่อมโยงความหมาย บทบาท และคุณค่าของ “การอธิษฐาน” จากแนวคิดทางพระพุทธศาสนา และจากวิถีชีวิตของคนในสังคมที่ปรากฏในวรรณคดีไทยที่เป็นกรณีศึกษา พบว่า “การอธิษฐาน” แสดงให้เห็นความผสมผสานทางความเชื่อ และความสัมพันธ์ของความตั้งมั่นในระดับโลกียะและโลกุตระที่ดำรงอยู่คู่กันเสมอมาในสังคมไทย โดยมีบทบาทในการสะท้อนปัญหาของผู้อธิษฐานซึ่งสัมพันธ์กับสถานะทางสังคมและช่วงชีวิต ส่วนคุณค่าของ “การอธิษฐาน” แบ่งได้เป็น 3 มิติ ได้แก่ 1) มิติปัจเจกบุคคล ถือเป็นหลักปรัชญาในการดำเนินชีวิตที่ช่วยให้บุคคลมีความหวัง มีขวัญกำลังใจ และดำรงความมุ่งมั่นในการกระทำเป้าหมายให้สำเร็จ เป็นเครื่องมืออย่างหนึ่งในการกำจัดความหวาดกลัวต่อ “ความไม่มั่นคง” ในชีวิตและจิตใจ 2) มิติสังคมและวัฒนธรรม ถือเป็นพฤติกรรมสำคัญที่เกิดจากรากฐานความเชื่อทางศาสนาอันนำไปสู่ผลผลิตทางวัฒนธรรมและหลักปฏิบัติทางสังคม เช่น ช่วยค้ำจุนระบบการเมืองการปกครองหรือความมั่นคงของรัฐในรูปแบบการสาปแช่ง เป็นต้น นับเป็นพลังแฝงทางวัฒนธรรมที่ดำรงอยู่และสืบต่อจากครั้งอดีต 3) มิติเหนือโลก “การอธิษฐาน” มีคุณค่าในระดับจิตวิญญาณในฐานะช่องทางสำหรับสื่อสารกับเบื้องบนหรืออำนาจบุญบารมีที่นำไปสู่การบรรลุเป้าหมายในระดับที่สูงขึ้นกระทั่งถึงการบรรลุธรรมได้ในที่สุด วิธีการที่จะทำให้ “การอธิษฐาน” ประสบผลสำเร็จได้ต้องประกอบด้วย “การกระทำ” ที่มุ่งมั่นในระดับชีวิตและ “ความคิด” ที่มั่นคงในระดับจิตวิญญาณ รวมถึงความเชื่อมั่นอย่างแน่วแน่ในตนเองเพื่อให้สามารถบรรลุเป้าหมายที่ตั้งใจไว้ได้ โดยเฉพาะเป้าหมายสูงสุดในทางพระพุทธศาสนา
